Washing instructions

Is it a good idea to wash your newly knitted clothes?

It's always a good idea to wash your newly knitted clothes before you wear them, as washing helps the stitches to lay down nicely.

Properly washing and drying your wool project is important to maintain its shape and texture.

Here at gaiagarn.dk we recommend that you use a wool soap and avoid using hot water, fabric softener, bleach and other additive products when washing wool.

Some of the enzymes in regular laundry detergent can damage the wool fibers, resulting in the clothes wearing out faster. This is obviously not desirable, especially when you have spent a long time knitting a sweater.

Most wool detergents can be used both for hand washing and in the washing machine.

Should you wash by hand or in the washing machine?

You can wash woolen clothes in the machine on the wool program or by hand. The key is to use water with a constant temperature and avoid switching between hot and cold water during washing and rinsing, as wool cannot tolerate large temperature fluctuations.

A recommended washing temperature is 20 degrees, and to remove excess water, it is best to spin the clothes in the machine instead of wringing them by hand.

How do you dry your wool yarn creations after washing?

Lay it flat on a towel or dry surface in its original shape and let it dry naturally. It is a good idea to avoid hanging woolen clothes as this can negatively affect the shape. To protect the fibres, avoid direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators while drying.

Do not overwash woollens as repeated washing can reduce their elasticity and softness. Only wash them when necessary. It is worth noting that wool is actually self-cleaning, so if there are no visible stains on your woollens, airing them outside for a few hours can often remove any odours, especially when the air is cool and fresh.
